Last Call to Donate to the 2016 AGO Silent Auction

The American Guild of Organists will be conducting its second biennial Silent Auction in connection with the AGO National Convention. We welcome your participation! The auction will be exclusively online from June 13–24 at BiddingForGood.com and will be open to everyone, not just AGO members. Proceeds will benefit the AGO Annual Fund, which supports educational programming for youth and adults.

Do you have something you, your business, or your chapter could donate to the cause?

Your gift could be mileage and/or travel rewards; a time share; concert/theatre/sporting event tickets; a recital, lesson, masterclass, or an organ crawl; CD recordings or books; a convention registration; a membership to your favorite museum or a visit to your local zoo. Another option would be to donate a gift certificate from a local business or restaurant you frequent. Just about any gift you make will qualify for a charitable tax deduction for its fair market value.

Here is how you can participate:

Send us a brief description and digital image of the item you wish to donate or an image that is symbolic of it. E-mail this to me at fathurman@agohq.org. Let us know the “fair market value” of your gift, your suggested minimum bid and/or reserve amount. The reserve amount is the lowest bid we would accept for your item. If the reserve is not met, the item does not sell. After the auction closes, I will send you the name and contact information of the winning bidder, then you will mail/ship your item at your own expense to the winner unless local pickup is required.

Please respond by Friday, June 10, if you plan to make a donation. If you have already made a donation, thank you!

Jean Langlais Remembered

The American Guild of Organists is pleased to announce the publication of Jean Langlais Remembered, a monograph by Marie-Louise Langlais (Foreword by James David Christie) available exclusively in electronic form on the AGO website.

This gift to the AGO is made in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Jean Langlais’s death on May 8, 1991.

Jean Langlais Remembered contains 11 chapters devoted to his life and musical career, 64 illustrations, and a chronological catalogue of his works.

“Jean Langlais was deeply attached to America and to Americans,” stated Marie-Louise Langlais. “This is why I hope this book appears on the internet for free, with open access to all, through the AGO, in recognition of the extraordinary work of this great Association, which has for so long assisted, supported, and enhanced the work of all church musicians. Jean Langlais Remembered is thus a tribute to the AGO, a tribute that I am sure that Jean Langlais himself would have applauded.”

AGO President John Walker, FAGO, added “We are deeply grateful to Mme. Langlais for her generous offer to the AGO for publication of this primary-source musicological document on our website.”

The AGO’s Three New Music Competitions Are Now Open to Entries

Competitions for new music are an important part of the Guild’s commitment to the future of organ and choral music. Seeking to draw on particular individual strengths, the AGO Committee on New Music has developed a procedure wherein composers submit proposals for commission rather than compose for stipulated criteria.

For more information see the AGO/Marilyn Mason, AGO/ECS, and Pogorzelski-Yankee sections.

Application deadlines are as follows:

AGO/ECS: July 1
Marilyn Mason: July 1
Pogorzelski-Yankee: August 31st

Applications are now being accepted online.

Listen to Sept Hommages, Claude Baker’s 2016 Pogorzelski-Yankee Award-winning Piece

Mr. Baker’s commissioned piece, Sept Hommages, was premiered Sunday March 13, 2016 (3PM) at Indiana University of Pennsylvania by Kola Owolabi. Before the recital, Dr. Baker participated in a half-hour interview with Dr. John Levey, who teaches composition at IUP. He spoke about his music, commented on the composition of Sept Hommages, and took questions from the audience.

The Ronald G. Pogorzelski and Lester D. Yankee Annual Competition is the AGO’s newest competition.

Both the interview and performance are available for viewing on YouTube:
